January In Iowa?

This weather is crazy. HB loves it because he works outside. I like snow and ice and some cold every once in a while. It should be happening soon I hope. I don't want my flowers to get confused and freeze in March or April. It's been over a month of nice balmy weather here in cloudy Iowa:)

I look outside and know that all this (perfect to clean your yard) weather is going to be gone this spring and it will be a wet, soggy, mess. And it will probably be cold. I don't even think it's cold enough now to prune anything. I have a few daffodils popping up but they do it every year and they always turn out fine.

I have a lot of house plants. I had a lot more before HB went to Iraq. I lost 35 houseplants that year. I've given some away to make room and I had to kill my Ficus Tree this past fall. I have a couple more infestations that the Ficus spread around that I have to deal with. One is my Angel Wing Begonia that I've had for 9 years. It came from a piece that fell off my grandmothers plant when we moved. It was only 3 inches tall then.

I used to have 12 different African Violets, but the glass shelves they were on collapsed during a party. It scared the partylite lady half to death. It made a big mess and only 4 survived. Maybe when things settle down a bit I'll replace some of them. African Violets do not like to be ignored.

My Aloe Vera and Christmas Cactus are my favorites. The Aloe because it's my most useful plant. If I put it on a burn soon enough I don't even get a blister. Just don't give it too much water and your fine. And the Christmas Cactus because it is so pretty and easy to take care of.

HB is going to 1st Sargent School for a couple of weeks. I've been spoiling him with yummy food and he hopes he makes his weight requirement. I told him if he goes over he will have a perfect excuse not to eat the Army food while he is there. Army food seems to raise his cholesterol levels. I think they must cook with a lot of lard.

JL got his braces off this week and now has a retainer for 2 years:) JR and JM will be graduating this spring together:) We will be getting some great pictures of them and Michael soon. JD is working a lot of hours and he finally has a car that works:) JAC is still living in Ames with Hollie they come and visit us on the weekends:) I'm doing Yoga at the gym twice a week:) Austin is ready for a potty chair:) We might have found my mother a furnace at a reasonable price:)

Looks like it's going to be a good year. Knock on wood.

Your Blog Should Be Blue

Your blog is a peaceful, calming force in the blogosphere.
You tend to avoid conflict - you're more likely to share than rant.
From your social causes to cute pet photos, your life is a (mostly) open book.

Back to Derby

I woke up early this morning and watched the sun rise out my bedroom window. As I was taking the picture my neighbor came out and got into her car. She didn't look around or react at all when the flash went off. I wonder what she would have thought about seeing her neighbor hanging out a window above her in a nightgown at 7:00 AM?

We went to the Derby Open House with Brenda and Scout. She loves to push all the buttons and see what happens. The Amish ladies that help serve refreshments were wearing pretty bright green dresses. I took more pictures and ate a few goodies. Spent a little time chasing my step-sisters kids and kissing Michael. It took me a while to get the host and hostess together for a photo but I did it. After that we went home. The sunset was beautiful, full of pinks and oranges with dark blue and gray clouds. It was a very nice day:)

Birds & Butterflies

Today it is overcast again. Yesterday the sun peeped out for a few hours just to tease us I'm sure. I walked into my dining room this morning and saw a very large woodpecker at my feeder. I tried to sneak up on it but my mother scared it away. Sometimes she has that effect.

After it left the much smaller woodpecker came by. I've been trying to get his picture for a couple of weeks now. I waited for the bluejay to come closer but then Austin scared all the birds away. He thought they were very funny.

I've been spending the week taking care of sick babies. I think Michael might be getting some teeth soon. He slobbers so much we can't keep his shirts dry. I'm surprised his little hands and face aren't chapped.

Happy New Year!

HB and I usually stay home on New Years Eve and watch children and movies. But this year we went to our friends house for the evening. It was a lot of fun but I was ready to come home as soon after mid-night as possible.

Michael stayed the night with us so his mommy and daddy could celebrate. My mom watched him the three hours we were gone and I guess he screamed his head off the whole time. Sorry mom. He was sleeping real good when we got home. We would have taken him with us but he didn't feel very well.

He slept all night till 5:30 then he sat in the dark for a while smiling and talking to me:) He is asleep now but I know if I go back to sleep he will wake up so I'll just wait till he goes home.

I was checking out some blogs and I kept seeing some nice quilts. I don't make quilts yet. But my mother does and her mother did too, so I'm sure I will someday. One of the neatest quilts I've seen is my step-mothers. It's lavender and white and has embroidered on it each state with the state flower.

I have a quilt that my grandmother Helen started and my mother finished. My mom also made a quilt for each of the boys and my brother. I have pictures of them but I have to get them scanned. And since my computer doesn't want to talk to my printer who knows how long that will be.
