And So It Begins

We are having some rough weather today. High winds, heavy rain, hail, and tornadoes. Watch out Don it looks like it might be coming your way.

For some reason tornadoes don't really care for Des Moines. They kind of hop over us and demolish our suburbs. When my kids were babies one hit West Des Moines and then went to the outer east side and caused some damage before heading to Ankeny to crush a few new homes. We got a lot of wind damage to our trees but that was it.

This time the hail was the biggest I've ever seen. We will have to check our new roof for damage this weekend. When the hail stopped bombarding us I ran outside and took a picture of this rotating cloud and checked for plant damage.

Just as I snapped the picture the tornado sirens started screeching and all the neighbors came out to see what was going on. Why? Because that's what we do here in Iowa. We send the kids to the basement and go outside and watch for tornadoes. I've seen videos of tornadoes taking out houses no more than a block away from the guys filming. I'm not that extreme if I see flying debris I'm outta there.

It's the second day of Spring and we are finally getting some snow. It looks like 4 inches so far. It's supposed to stop in about 2 hours. It's 27 degrees outside so I guess I'll stay in today and clean the basement. Jodi is coming over to do some painting. Her birthday is Thursday so I'll have to think of something special for her.

I actually feel like I'm getting things accomplished this week and I've been getting more sleep. I'm enjoying this little stay at home vacation. I think HB is too;) The phone hardly ever rings, it's been very peaceful.

While HB was outside shoveling, I was running around taking pictures. The snow will probably melt away tomorrow. At least I can finally post some winter pictures. Sorry you had to wait till Spring.

It's spring break and all the children are with their mothers:) I have a whole week to get things done inside and out. The first thing I'm going to do is scrub the floor. It will be nice to have a clean floor with no sticky spots for more than a minute.

I can't do much in the yard other than clean up the dead stuff but I have been buying things to plant. I just can't help myself. I'm going to try to grow Dahlias this year. I've never bothered before because you have to dig them up each Fall. I bought three Minnesota dahlias. They are white with pink edges. If these grow well and I remember to dig them up I'll try more next year.

I also started some seeds for the Moon Garden. And I have 24 Convallaria (Lily Of The Valley) just waiting to be planted under the Tree-bush. I'm going to have to discover it's identity soon. I can't just keep calling it a Tree-bush. I'll take a picture of it in a couple of months when it flowers and maybe someone will know.

Last but certainly not least. For Instant Flower Gratification I saved this beautiful cactus from overwatering at the store. I thought it was a Christmas Cactus but they call it a Sunrise Cactus. The flowers close in the evening and open back up in the morning. It had a plant stake in it that said Hatiora Hybrid 'Rio'

I See Sprouts

I was told that it is hard to grow parsley from seed. A year ago I would have said ok and bought some plants instead. But a year ago I didn't know that it was almost impossible to grow lavender from seed and I did it. So this year I'm trying again with the lavender and I'm attempting to grow some parsley.

So far it looks good. Last weekend I sowed six pellets with parsley seed that I froze in the freezer for a week. I already have one sprouting. This weekend I'm doing six more with the same seed only I soaked them in water over night. I'll plant one more row with seed that hasn't been frozen or soaked in water. And then see what happens. And the rest of the seed I'll sow outside.

I scattered lavender seed over six more pellets. And will do another six with a different kind. I would like to try munstead if I can find it. I just might have to do 2 flats of herbs. I'm already running out of room in the first one.

Happy 2nd Birthday Austin

Happy birthday baby. Your two years old now:) You have your own blog . You are very smart and cute. I can't believe how fast the time has gone. I'm so happy you are a part of our family. And you always will be no matter what. You are such a special little boy that it is very easy to love you.

As you march on to your independence and we all suffer through the terrible two's I'm glad we will have your blog to look back on and remember what a sweet baby you have been. As you kick and scream trying to get your way, I will fondly remember when you were small enough to hold onto without fear of bruises. And when you stand there with that obstinate look on your face and tell me NO for the 1000th time I will just smile and remember that sometimes you take after me;)

I hope you have a great year and please don't teach Michael any naughty things. Like biting, hitting, or swearing. He can learn that stuff on his own without your help.
